Ming is a seasoned former professional engineer with deep understanding and extensive experiences in the area of real time and non-real time numerical simulation of electro-magnetic transients in power systems.
Ming received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering in the Spring of 1982 and 1984, respectively, from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one of the best university in China. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1994 from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada.
Ming was employed by the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University as a lecturer between September 1984 and January 1989.
Ming joined RTDS Technologies in May, 1994 as a Research Engineer when there were only 9 employees (the owners included) at the company. He was the first engineer (other than the owners of the company) employed by the company. He was the Manager of Power System Software Development for many years.
Ming implemented numerous component models for the RTDS simulators, including
- all the Jiles-Atherton CT models,
- all the dynamic load models
- all the sequencer models for fault controls,
- most of the transformer models,
- all the faulted transformer models,
- variable conductance type of transformer saturation and hysteresis model,
- some of the transmission line models,
- a lot of other component models.
Ming pioneered the idea of stacking more than one power system model to a power system processor when 3PC cards were first introduced.
Ming single-handedly created the UDC (User Defined Component, the predecessor of Component Builder) compiler that enables developers and users to write component models on the RTDS Simulators in RTDS C instead of hardware dependent assembly languages for 3PC, RPC, GPC and PB5 cards. UDC has greatly improved the easiness, portability and maintainability of component model developments. It played a very important role in the development of RTDS component models for almost twenty years until it was completely phased out when RSCAD version 5 was released in late 2016.
In recent years, Ming has mainly been working on implementing FDNE (Frequency Dependent Network Equivalent) on the RTDS simulators.
In the past twenty some years, Ming has commissioned close to one hundred RTDS projects.
